Breakfast is πρωινό (proino), from πρωί, the word for morning — so it is literally "the morning thing". Stress the final syllable: pro-i-NO. Hotels use it constantly: το πρωινό σερβίρεται στις οχτώ, breakfast is served at eight.
The traditional Greek breakfast is lighter than visitors expect: coffee, perhaps a κουλούρι (the sesame bread ring sold on street corners) or a slice of pie from the bakery. The generous spread of yoghurt, honey, eggs, and pastries now marketed as "Greek breakfast" is real food, but it is a hotel invention more than a village habit.
The same word doubles as the adjective "morning" — το πρωινό δρομολόγιο is the morning bus route — so keep an eye on context when you meet it outside a menu.
