Adding Speak Greek to Your Home Screen
By the end of this lesson, you can open Speak Greek from your home screen, in its own window, without opening a browser first.
Speak Greek runs in a web browser, and it can also be added to your home screen. Once it is there it opens in its own window, with no address bar and no tabs, and it sits alongside everything else on your device.
There is nothing to download from an app store and no second account to create. It is the same site you are reading now, opened a different way.
Why put it on your home screen
- One tap to your lesson. No typing an address, no searching through bookmarks.
- The full screen. The browser’s address bar and toolbar disappear, which makes the most difference on a phone.
- It stays in view. An icon next to the apps you already open every day makes a daily habit more likely than a bookmark does.
You will still need an internet connection to study.
On iPhone or iPad
This works in Safari and nowhere else. Chrome, Firefox and Edge on iPhone and iPad cannot add a site to the home screen, and the option will not appear in their menus. If you normally browse in one of those, open the site in Safari first.
- Open speakgreek.co.uk in Safari.
- Tap the Share button: the square with an arrow pointing upwards, in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll down the list of options and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Edit the name if you would like to, then tap Add in the top right.
The icon appears on your home screen with your other apps.
On Android
- Open speakgreek.co.uk in Chrome.
- A banner may slide up from the bottom offering to install the app. Tap it if you see it.
- If no banner appears, tap the three dots in the top right, then Add to Home screen or Install app.
- Confirm with Install.
The exact wording shifts between Android versions and phone makers, so expect Install app on some devices and Add to Home screen on others. Both do the same thing.
On Mac or Windows
In Chrome or Edge:
- Open speakgreek.co.uk.
- Look at the right-hand end of the address bar for the install icon: a small screen with an arrow pointing down into it.
- Click it, then click Install.
In Safari on macOS Sonoma or later, choose File → Add to Dock from the menu bar.
If you cannot find the option
- Check you are in the right browser. On iPhone and iPad it has to be Safari.
- Let the page finish loading, then look again.
- Check whether it is already there. Once a site is installed, the option disappears from the menu. Look through your home screen or app list before trying again.
To remove it later, delete the icon the way you would delete any app. Your account and your progress are untouched, and the site stays available in your browser.
Cultural note: Greek tends to build its own words for technology rather than borrow the English ones. An app is εφαρμογή, from a verb meaning “to apply”. A computer is υπολογιστής, something that calculates. A web page is ιστοσελίδα, from ιστός, a web. To download is κατεβάζω, “to bring down”, the same up-and-down picture English uses. Set a phone’s language to Greek and these are the words waiting on the first screen you see.
