Wine is κρασί (krasi), stressed kra-SI. Red is κόκκινο κρασί, white is λευκό or άσπρο κρασί, and rosé is ροζέ. Ancient Greek had a different word — οίνος — which survives today only in compounds and on the odd wine-shop sign (οινοποιείο, winery).
Tavernas commonly sell open house wine by the half kilo or kilo rather than by the bottle — μισό κιλό κρασί is half a litre of the house wine, served in a metal jug, and it is usually the best-value drink on the table. Nobody will blink if that is all you order.
When glasses are raised, the toast is γεια μας — "to our health". Clink with everyone within reach and make eye contact; a toast offered to the table and not met is quietly noticed.
